What Makes Hiring Filipino Maids A Popular Choice In Singapore?
  • Cultural Affinity

Many Filipinos have grown up in households where domestic work and caregiving are common, and may have developed skills and experience in these areas from a young age. This cultural background and experience make them a popular choice for domestic work in Singapore, where many households require assistance with housework and childcare.

  • English Proficiency

Filipino maids are generally proficient in English, as it is widely spoken in the Philippines and is taught as a second language in schools. This makes communication with their Singaporean employers easier, as they can easily understand and follow instructions in English.

  • Experience

Many Filipino maids have previous experience in domestic work, including childcare and elderly care. This experience makes them highly sought after in Singapore, where there is a high demand for skilled domestic workers.

  • Work Experience

Filipino maids are often known for being hardworking, diligent, and dedicated to their work. They are willing to take on tasks and work long hours to ensure that their employers are satisfied with their work.

  • Government Support

The Philippine government has actively promoted overseas employment for their citizens, including domestic work in Singapore. This has led to an increase in the number of Filipino maids available for hire in Singapore, making them a popular choice for households looking for domestic help.

  • Compatibility

Filipino culture is similar to Singaporean culture in many ways, including language, religion, and family values. This makes it easier for employers to relate to their maids and for maids to adapt to the lifestyle in Singapore. Filipino maids often feel at home in Singapore and are able to integrate well into their employers' households.

Structured Training Program

We have a local training team in the Philippines, whom we work closely with to design a comprehensive curriculum and to train our helpers. Our curriculum comprises language, cooking, cleaning, childcare, pet care, elderly care, infant and baby care training, and is conducted even before our helpers find a match with employers. Upon matching, we work with local trainers to provide a more tailored set of training to prepare individual helpers for their job in Singapore.

Upon arriving in Singapore, our Filipino maids undergo a structured training program that helps them learn the skills they need for their new job and mentally prepare them for their new role. Our Director, Mr Tay, personally conducts orientation and onboarding programs to brief all our maids on the correct work etiquette, quality of work, healthy rest day programs, and other relevant issues, including tips and knowledge based on his thirty years of experience.

Best Home Employment takes pride in providing comprehensive training and support for our helpers and employers. Our Director personally works with trainers to ensure helpers’ progress and constantly review our training programme so that our helpers can excel beyond their job requirements. For example, we are the only agency to offer a complimentary year-long online video training programme that covers over 140 topics (and will continue to grow), accessible to our helpers even before their arrival in Singapore.

To ensure that our helpers meet our standards, they undergo a thorough assessment on basic household skills such as ironing, steaming clothes, vacuuming, and general cleaning during their stay in our dormitory before deployment. Throughout their training, there are several assessments in the Philippines and in Singapore that they have to pass before deployment. We further tailor and train helpers that require skill enhancement for particular fields. Additionally, if employers would like further training for helpers due to complexity of their requirements e.g. advanced care for elderly with disabilities, we are happy to work out a tailored curriculum for helpers, which includes training with third-party partner course providers.

Financial Check

Filipino maids who wish to work in Singapore must go through a financial checking process to ensure they are fit for employment. This process includes the verification of identity, employment history, and financial history to ensure that they have no outstanding debts or legal issues that may cause problems during their employment in Singapore. Additionally, a medical check-up and orientation are also required to prepare them for work and make them aware of their rights and responsibilities as an employee.

Once the financial checking process is complete, the employer is responsible for providing the maid with accommodation, food, and other basic necessities as well as paying her salary. Filipino maids in Singapore are entitled to certain benefits such as rest days and medical leave as stipulated by Singaporean labor laws. Employers are required to comply with these laws and regulations to ensure that their domestic workers are treated fairly and with respect.

Work Permit

Apart from the financial aspect, specific documentation requirements must be fulfilled to hire Filipino maids legally in Singapore. Employers must apply for a work permit on behalf of their helper and ensure that all necessary documents are obtained for the helper to work abroad. The employer is responsible for covering all costs associated with obtaining these documents.

To apply for a work permit for a Filipino maid, employers must provide the maid's passport details and their own and their family members' information. Employers must also disclose their income information and obtain the maid's written consent. This is done to ensure that the maid is well-protected and that the employer adheres to Singaporean labour laws.

Training and Orientation Programmes

When hiring a first-time Filipino maid, she must attend training that the employer registers for. This training, known as the Settling-In Programme (SIP), helps prepare the maid for the work ahead and ensures that she is familiar with Singaporean culture and customs.

As a first-time employer, attending the Employers Orientation Programme (EOP) is mandatory. This programme helps employers understand their roles and responsibilities when hiring a Filipino maid. It is essential to note that the SIP is mandatory for all new Filipino helpers, and the employer is responsible for all associated costs, including the cost of training and any other expenses related to hiring a domestic worker.

Best Home provides all helpers with a complimentary year-long video training program to assist with their transition into their new role.

Cost & Payment

  Salary

The salary of a Filipino maid in Singapore varies depending on their work experience and the country they come from. For new maids, the average salary ranges from USD$550 per month. However, for those with previous work experience in Singapore, their salary can range from USD $550 to $620 per month.

It is important to note that the salary of a Filipino maid can also depend on factors such as the employer's requirements, the maid's qualifications, and the job scope. In some cases, Filipino maids may receive additional compensation for working overtime or taking on additional responsibilities. Employers are encouraged to discuss the salary and compensation package with their maid before hiring to ensure that both parties are in agreement.

At Best Home Employment Agency, we facilitate salary negotiation to ease this process for employers.

Off Day Compensation

According to Singaporean regulations, all foreign domestic helpers, including Filipino maids, are entitled to four off days per month. If the maid and employer agree to work on those days, the maid must be compensated for each of the off days not taken. However, it is important to note that there is a mandatory minimum of one day off per month for the maid.

The compensation for off days is calculated based on the daily salary of the Filipino maid, which is determined by dividing their basic salary by 26 days. The daily salary for Filipino maids in Singapore typically ranges from $21 to $31 per day, depending on their experience and qualifications.

Employers must ensure they provide compensation for each day off not taken by the maid, as it is their right to rest and recharge. Failure to do so may result in penalties or legal action. It is essential to comply with these regulations to ensure a fair and respectful work environment for the domestic worker.

Levy

In Singapore, the government sets monthly maid levy rates which can be subject to change. As of April 1st, 2019, the monthly maid levy rates for Filipino maids are as follows:

For the first maid, the levy is $300 per month. For the second maid, the levy is $450 per month. There is also a concessionary levy rate of $60 per month, subject to certain conditions. Households with children under the age of 16 or with persons aged 67 and above may be eligible for the concessionary levy rate.

It is the employer's responsibility to pay the levy for their Filipino maid, and failure to do so can result in penalties or legal consequences. It is important for employers to keep up to date with the latest levy rates and comply with these regulations to avoid any issues or penalties.

Meals

As an employer of a Filipino maid in Singapore, it is important to provide adequate and nutritious meals as a basic requirement. This includes providing three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Employers should also be mindful and respectful of their maid's dietary restrictions or preferences.

Some Filipino maids may have cultural or religious dietary requirements, and discussing these with them beforehand is important to ensure their needs are met. Employers may also consider giving their maid some flexibility in meal planning or allowing them to cook some of their traditional dishes to help them feel more comfortable and at home. Providing good meals not only ensures that the maid is well-nourished, but also helps to build a good relationship between employer and maid.

health-insurance.png

Insurance

Filipino maids in Singapore must be provided with medical insurance coverage by their employer, as mandated by MOM. The policy covers their medical expenses, hospitalisation, and surgery fees. The insurance must provide a minimum coverage with a minimum $60,000 per year for inpatient treatment, including COVID-19 related medical treatment and hospitalisation costs.

Medical Examination

Filipino maids in Singapore are required to undergo a medical examination before they start working. This examination is conducted by a Singaporean registered doctor and includes screening for infectious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis. Employers are responsible for the cost of the medical examination.

The medical examination is a mandatory requirement to ensure the health and safety of the maid, as well as to protect the employer and the local community from infectious diseases. The cost of the medical examination is an additional expense that employers must bear when hiring a Filipino maid.

The examination report must be submitted to the Ministry of Manpower within two weeks of the maid's arrival in Singapore. If the maid is found to have any infectious diseases, the employer is required to inform the ministry and take appropriate measures to ensure the maid receives proper medical treatment.

To help employers manage the medical costs for their foreign domestic workers, we have collaborated with 35 clinics located islandwide, to offer special rates for medical checks, GP consultations, and dental services. As part of this program, employers can access GP consultation fees for as low as $15 and a complete 6-monthly medical examination for 乐山市than $45. These rates are exclusive to only Best Home Employment helpers.
