Superior Domestic Services With Indonesian Maids in Singapore

With Indonesia's large population, there is a significant huge workforce within the country, leading many Indonesians to also seek job opportunities overseas. As a result, a considerable number of Indonesian female migrant workers work in the domestic sector as maids or domestic workers.

Indonesian domestic helpers are highly sought after by employers in Singapore due to their adaptability and flexibility in handling a wide range of household duties. Most Indonesian maids have previous experience working as domestic helpers in Indonesia, which allows them to adjust quickly to their new environment in Singapore. They are known to excel in various household tasks, such as infant care, child care, elderly care, general housework, and cooking. Additionally, Singapore is located close to Indonesia, and Indonesian families are generally more supportive of their women working in Singapore. Singapore is also known for offering higher salaries to domestic helpers than other countries in Southeast Asia. Therefore, it is not surprising that Indonesian domestic helpers form the largest group of maids in Singapore.

Benefits of Hiring an Indonesian Maid

Indonesian maids, also known as Indon Maids, are a popular choice for domestic helpers in Singapore compared to Burmese and Mizoram maids due to several factors.

1. Work Ethic

Indonesian maids are renowned for their strong work ethic and dedication to their duties. They are typically hardworking, responsible, and diligent in completing their tasks.

2. Reliability

Indonesian maids are very dependable and trustworthy, which makes them a great choice for families who need help that can be counted on.

3. Cultural Compatibility

Indonesian maids are often a great match for Singaporean families, as they share similar cultural values and customs. They are also likely to be proficient in the Malay language, which can facilitate communication and foster a positive working relationship. There is a significant proportion of older Singaporeans who have some basic knowledge of the Malay language. Moreover, since Singapore has a sizable Malay population, families often prefer to hire domestic helpers who share their religious faith.

Furthermore, Indonesian food culture is highly similar and well-liked among Singaporeans. Dishes such as nasi goreng, curry, and rendang chicken are popular and relatable to local Singaporean families, making Indonesian maids appealing for their cooking abilities and culinary skills.

4. Cost Effective

Hiring an Indonesian maid can be a cost-effective option for families, as the cost of living in Indonesia is generally lower than in Singapore. This means that Indonesian maids typically command lower salaries than their Singaporean counterparts, making them an affordable choice for families on a budget.

5. Versatility

Indonesian maids are highly versatile and adaptable, and can assist with a wide range of household tasks. This means that families can rely on their Indonesian maid to provide a range of services, from cooking and cleaning to childcare and elderly care.

Structured Training Program

We have a local training team in Indonesia, whom we work closely with to design a comprehensive curriculum and provide training for our helpers even before they are matched with employers. Our curriculum covers language, cooking, cleaning, childcare, pet care, infant and baby care training, and is tailored to individual helpers upon matching with employers.

Upon arrival in Singapore, our Indonesian maids undergo a structured training program to help them learn the skills they need for their new job and mentally prepare them for their role. Our Director personally conducts orientation and onboarding programs to brief our maids on correct work etiquette, quality of work, healthy rest day programs, and other relevant issues, based on his thirty years of experience.

We take pride in providing comprehensive training and support for our helpers and employers, including a complimentary year-long online video training program that covers over 140 topics and is accessible to helpers before their arrival in Singapore.

To ensure that our Indonesian helpers meet our standards, they undergo a thorough assessment on basic household skills such as ironing, steaming clothes, vacuuming, and general cleaning during their stay in our dormitory before deployment. Throughout their training, there are several assessments in Indonesia and in Singapore that they have to pass before deployment.

We further tailor and train helpers who require skill enhancement for particular fields. If employers require further training for their helpers due to complex requirements, such as advanced care for elderly with disabilities, we are happy to work out a tailored curriculum in collaboration with third-party partner course providers.

Thorough Screening

At Best Home Employment, we take the recruitment and screening process of our Indonesian maids very seriously. Our recruitment team in Indonesia conducts a thorough physical observation of the candidate, including their height and weight, preferences, or if they have tattoos. We have strict guidelines on the type of tattoos we accept and do not accept, which we communicate to our candidates during the interview process.

Our team also reviews their previous work experience and matches it with the job scope in Singapore, ensuring they have the necessary skills to meet the demands of the job.

In addition, we verify that the candidate's family has agreed to them working in Singapore, and we conduct a comprehensive medical examination to identify any pre-existing conditions. Our Indonesian maids undergo rigorous training in various household tasks, including cooking, cleaning, and childcare, and must pass the Household Service Worker National Competency (HSW NC II) certification.

We have an online database consisting of all our helpers’ data for your convenient viewing and selection. We provide our recommendations and comments on each helper to aid your selection process. We are also happy to select a helper for you, simply contact us!

How to Hire an Indonesian Maid in Singapore?

If you are interested in hiring an Indonesian maid in Singapore, here are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Find a reputable employment agency: Look for a licensed agency that specialises in hiring foreign domestic workers. You can find a list of licensed agencies on the Ministry of Manpower's website.

  2. Select a candidate: Once you have found an agency, you can browse their database of Indonesian maids and select a candidate that matches your requirements.

  3. Apply for a work permit: The employment agency will help you apply for a work permit for your chosen maid. You will need to provide personal and employment details, such as your income and household composition.

  4. Arrange for pre-employment medical examination: Your maid will need to undergo a medical examination to ensure that they are fit to work. This can be done at a designated clinic or hospital.

  5. Sign the employment contract: Once the work permit is approved, you will need to sign an employment contract with your maid. The contract should include details such as working hours, salary, rest days, and job scope.

  6. Purchase insurance: You are required to purchase medical insurance for your maid, which provides coverage for hospitalisation and surgery, as mandated by the Ministry of Manpower.

  7. Pay the maid levy: As an employer, you are required to pay a monthly levy for each foreign domestic worker you hire. The amount of the levy depends on the number of foreign domestic workers you employ.

  8. Settle-in program: Your Indonesian maid will also need to attend a Settling-In Program (SIP) to help her adjust to working and living in Singapore.

  9. Ongoing support: As an employer, you are responsible for providing ongoing support and supervision to your Indonesian maid, ensuring her well-being and fair treatment.

In addition to our extensive training program, we also support our Indonesian maids with healthy rest day programs through collaborations with NGOs and charity organisations. These programs provide our helpers with the opportunity to learn new skills and engage in enjoyable activities during their free time.

Hassle-Free Process

Our agency has extensive experience in facilitating the hiring of Migrant Domestic Workers in Singapore, providing a process that is free from complications and unexpected expenses. We offer a range of comprehensive services to ensure that your hiring journey is smooth and hassle-free, from start to finish.

Financial Check

Firstly, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) conducts a financial check to ensure that the employer can hire and maintain a domestic helper. This is because, in addition to the monthly salary, which can cost between $550 to $800, other expenses must be considered.

Some of these financial responsibilities include monthly levy payments to MOM, compensation for working on rest days, living expenses, etc. Therefore, the MOM is vigilant in ensuring that individuals who hire an Indonesian Migrant Domestic Worker are well-informed and financially capable of undertaking the responsibility.

Work Permit

In addition to the financial aspect, certain documentation requirements must be met. Employers are required to apply for a work permit for their helper to work legally in Singapore. It is the employer's responsibility to ensure that the helper has all the necessary documents to work abroad, and all the costs associated with obtaining these documents are the employer's responsibility.

To apply for a work permit for an Indonesian MDW, employers will need to provide certain information. This includes the MDW's passport details and the employer's and their family members' details. Employers will also need to provide their income information and obtain the MDW's written consent.

Additionally, the Ministry of Manpower requires employers to have insurance for either medical or personal accidents and to purchase a $5,000 security bond for each helper they hire.

Training and Orientation Programmes

If you are hiring an Indonesian maid for the first time, the maid must attend training that the employer registers for. This training helps to prepare the maid for the work ahead.

Attending the Employers Orientation Programme (EOP) is mandatory as a first-time employer, which helps employers understand their roles and responsibilities when hiring a Migrant Domestic Worker (MDW).

It's important to note that the training, also known as the Settling-In Programme (SIP), is mandatory for all new Indonesian Helpers. Additionally, Best Home provides all helpers with a complimentary year-long video training programme, which employers can access to look through the courses and monitor helpers’ progress.

Cost & Payment

Salary

The salary of an Indonesian maid varies depending on their work experience and the country they are coming from. For new maids, the average salary ranges from $550 per month. However, for those who have worked previously in Singapore, their salary can range from $6000 to $7000 per month. For maids coming from Hong Kong or Taiwan, their salary range is slightly higher, with an average of $700 to $820 per month. It is important to note that the salary of an Indonesian maid can also depend on factors such as the employer's requirements, the maid's qualifications, and the job scope.

At Best Home Employment Agency, we facilitate salary negotiation to ease this process for employers.

Off Day Compensation

According to Singapore's rules and regulations, all foreign domestic helpers are entitled to four off days per month. If the domestic helper and employer agree to work on those days, they must be compensated for each of the off days not taken. However, take note that there is a compulsory minimum of one day off per month.

The compensation for off days is calculated based on the daily salary of the Indonesian maid. This is calculated by dividing their basic salary by 26 days. The daily salary for Indonesian maids in Singapore ranges from $21 to $31 per day, depending on their experience and qualifications.

Employers must ensure they provide compensation for each day off not taken by the maid, as it is their right to rest and recharge. Failure to do so may result in penalties or legal action.

Levy

The government determines monthly maid levy rates in Singapore, which are subject to change periodically. As of April 1st, 2019, the monthly maid levy rates are as follows:

For the first maid, the levy is $300 per month. For the second maid, the levy is $450 per month. The concessionary levy is $60 per month. Certain conditions must be met in order to qualify for the concessionary levy rate. Households with children under the age of 16 or with persons aged 67 and above may be eligible for the concessionary levy rate.

It is important to note that the levy is the employer's responsibility to pay and failure to do so can result in penalties or even legal consequences.

Meals

It is important to note that providing your Indonesian maid with adequate and nutritious meals is a basic requirement as an employer. This includes providing three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As an employer, being mindful of and respectful of your maid's dietary restrictions or preferences is also essential.

Some Indonesian maids may have cultural or religious dietary requirements, and discussing these with them beforehand is important to ensure that their dietary needs are met. Additionally, you may consider giving your maid some flexibility in meal planning or allowing them to cook some of their traditional dishes to make them feel more at home.

health-insurance.png

Insurance

Starting in July, employers will be required to provide a minimum medical insurance coverage of $60,000 for their maids and migrant workers, as mandated by MOM. This new requirement will become a mandatory cost for all helpers, and failure to comply may result in penalties.

Medical

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) mandates that foreign domestic workers undergo a pre-employment medical examination before they can be employed in Singapore. In addition, MOM requires that these workers undergo a medical check-up every six months to ensure that they remain in good health and free from infectious diseases.

The examination report must be submitted to the Ministry of Manpower within two weeks of the maid's arrival in Singapore. If the maid is found to have any infectious diseases, the employer is required to inform the ministry and take appropriate measures to ensure the maid receives proper medical treatment. Employers are responsible for the cost of the medical examination.

To help employers manage the medical costs for their foreign domestic workers, we have collaborated with 35 clinics located islandwide, to offer special rates for medical checks, GP consultations, and dental services. As part of this program, employers can access GP consultation fees for as low as $15 and a complete 6-monthly medical examination for just $45. These rates are exclusive to only Best Home Employment helpers.
